Blog #12, 14 Leadership traits and who I would follow...

Good morning cadets and I hope that you are ready for the last marking period of JROTC. This year has flown bye and I can't believe that it is almost over.  Since we are looking at leaders and the traits that make them leaders, your task this week is to select a leader from the 20th or 21st Century and explain which of the 14 leadership traits apply to that person and why. Once you have done so, select a video or web site to post to our blog. Once you have done this, your last task is to respond or comment on your peer's work. Remember that leaders do not have to be in the military or politics and can come in all shapes and sizes.  Here is my short video on Leaders of the 20th Century.  My selection is for Franklin Delano Roosevelt.  He exhibited all of the 14 leadership traits on a daily basis.  He battled poor health and displayed Physical Courage.  I admire that President FDR was Decisive and made decisions based on what he believed the country needed. FDR never lost sight that he worked for the American people. Here is the video and I hope you enjoy it along with the other leaders:

  1. I believe that Mohatmas Gandhi was a great leader. Of the fourteen leadership traits, I feel that bearing, decisiveness, dependability, and endurance apply to him. They apply to him because, while he was trying to help India gain its independence from British rule, he had to be ready for the obstacles that would come. Instead of fighting fire with fire, he used peaceful protests which gave him a positive bearing. The native Indians looked up to Gandhi to help them rid India of Britain. Gandhi also fasted and was mistreated by British soldiers. He had the physical endurance and also mental, since he had to deal with many negative factors that were thrown his way. In the end, he prevailed and India gained its independence.

    1. I think he is a good leader because Mohatmas Gandhi is similar to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, he fought for their people peacefully and they are successful in their action.

I believe that Martin Luther King Jr is a great leader during the 20th century because he helped with the civil rights movement and helped the colored gain equal rights. Martin Jr has the traits of courage, unselfishness, knowledge, justice and judgment. his courage, justice and judgement is shown when he gave a speech about his dream, he has he courage to stand up upon whites and give his speech. If Martin Jr does not have justice he wont fight for justice and equality for the people of his race and wont have the judgement of knowing that people are being unfair to them and it is time for his to do something to stop the racism. with Martin Jr's knowledge the civil rights movement became a success, he gathered people and gave his dream and allowed people to know that if we work together there will be such thing as equality.

  3. One of the leaders I choose is Joseph Stalin. He was more of a "cult of personality" type of leader than a goody goody two shoes leader. One of the traits he does have is courage. He became the leader of the red army against the Wehrmacht when they were invading Moscow. Joseph Stalin was actually selfless in way for example he took a small salary, and did not accumulate a vast wealth. Though Joseph Stalin was a dictator and made some bad choice. However some of is choices lead the Soviet Union into a world powered until his death.

    1. Oh and another thing for those of you don't no what cult of personality is here is the definition from google.

A personality cult or cult of personality is a system in which a leader is able to control a group of people through the sheer force of his or her personality and is often portrayed as a god-like figure.

    2. It's quite interesting that you chose a totalitarian as the subject for this description of yours. Although I have to say, he was a great leader considering that he was able to influence the majority of the Soviet Unions even with such an unideal regime. The only problem was that he didn't use his leadership skills for the greater good.

    3. Sometimes a leader can have a leadership trait to lead others to success even if they don't fit the "script" as a good leader

One great leader of the 20th century would be Winston Churchill, being the prime minister of Great Britain during World War II. During a horrific time of war in which Britain was on the losing side as Germany's fierce military took control of country after country quickly getting closer and closer. The cities of Britain was under constant bombardment of the world's first cruise missiles the V2. However he did not surrender and held his head high through a losing war and would lead the country to victory in the end. He showed courage, determination, and leadership as he continued to fight and not back down. He showed selfless service when he served as a british officer during the Second Boer War and World War I.

  5. Although he might not have been an advocate of coexistence, Jawaharlal Nehru's capacity to make rational decisions regardless of the tensions that surrounded him during his rule earned him the label of dependability, bearing, and courage. On account of his genuine concern for the people he governed, he was deemed as supreme and benevolent. The choices which he made corresponded with external conditions, which was why his rule was efficient. Unlike promoters of peace, Nehru made it a point to defend his nation even if it meant having to engage in military action. Although this statement makes him appear as quite belligerent, it should also be considered that a true leader puts the welfare of his people before anyone else.

One leader would have to be Nelson Mandela. He worked to help end racial segregation in South America. He had the ability to bring together a nation previously divided. He showed signs of courage, with mental and physical. Even though He was arrested, He didn't let his opinion waver, He stood true to his judgement, No matter the critic. This takes courage of mind. He could have been killed yet He didn't let that stop him. He has the endurance to try to end segregation while others gave up because they couldn't see it happening. He has demonstrated other traits beneficial to a leader.

  7. Kobe Bryant in my opinion is the greatest player to play the game of basketball. Many statistics and facts about this player lead me to believe that he is the greatest to play the game. I have come to believe after watching hi, play the game and seeing how he handles himself on court. I have come to the conclusion that he is better than Larry Bird, better than Michael Jordan, better than wilt Chamberlain, or bill Russell. Three solid reasons have led me to believe this.
First of all, Kobe seems to have no fear when he plays the game. He does not worry about missing or worry about getting blocked he worries about being the best player and leader he can be. It seems to me that when player try to block his shot or dunk on him he blocks their shot or makes a jumper right in their face. This motivates me as a person to have a work ethic like his.
Second, He doesn’t need the best team around him to be the best player. He makes others around him good if not better. It is interesting to see that when he left the Lakers the team fell apart. He was the missing link. Players like Jordan needed players around him to learn and become better and feed off of him. That’s why they had Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman on their team because he needed them to win. Kobe just plays his game. Also he is the most well rounded player to play the game. He had everything jumping, athleticism, smarts, and ingenuity the only problem is that he was always living in Michael Jordan’s shadow.

  8. One of the most inspiring leaders during the 20th century is Jackie Robinson. He started playing baseball in the negro leagues and soon escalated to the Dodgers in MLB. He broke the color barrier for every baseball, when back then you could only play if you were "white". He displayed a leadership trait of barren. When everyone kept pushing him around and calling him names during the game, he never was disrespectful and still played for the love of the game. Jackie Robinson opened up the doors for many colored baseball players, inspiring them to keep playing and make it in the big leagues regardless of the color of your skin.

    1. I agree that Jackie Robinson is a great leader. He stood up for what he wanted even if it meant people saying negative things about him because he was black. He was probably the inspiration to other negro players that wanted to play on times with white people.

One of the most inspiring leaders during the 1900s was Mohandas "Mahatma" Gandhi aka the man who discovered nonviolent protests spoke louder than any else. He displayed "integrity" as he never backed down to British bribes or threats until India was freed as a colony. He was assassinated, but his goal was achieved.

In my opinion Malala Yousazai is a great leader of the 21st century. Some of the leadership traits she shows is bearing and dedication. Malala Yousafzai was born on July 12, 1997, in Mingora, Pakistan. As a child, she became an advocate for girls' education, which resulted in the Taliban issuing a death threat against her. On October 9, 2012, a gunman shot Malala when she was traveling home from school. In early 2009, Yousafzai began blogging for the BBC about living under the Taliban's threats to deny her an education. In order to hide her identity, she used the name Gul Makai. However, she was revealed to be the BBC blogger in December of that year. With a growing public platform, Yousafzai continued to speak out about her right, and the right of all women, to an education. Her activism resulted in a nomination for the International Children's Peace Prize in 2011. That same year, she was awarded Pakistan's National Youth Peace Prize. Malala fought for what she thought was right and never backed down. She is truly a GREAT YOUNG LEADER!!!!!!
