Blog #3 Truly a story of caring and compassion, what do you think?

Welcome again to your 3rd assignment with JROTC as a LET1. Since we are looking at becoming a great citizen, it is always important to examine and learn from other's lessons in life on what they have done to excel and stand out in a positive manner.  Your task is to watch the following video, post your opinion and to find another story that is in print or video that is online and post the URL back to our site. Last as always is to comment on your peer's work in a professional manner to inspire their work.  As always, good luck and I look forward to seeing your results.

  1. I agree with this video because it's always good to help others especially if they are injured and when you help someone it will come back as a good deed.

The fact that the runner saw an injured person, put her hopes and ambitions behind her to help the injured person shows how compassionate and heroic the girl is. She could have simply ran past likewise to all the other runners, yet she was the hero amongst the hundreds of people, for she stopped to help. I find this amazing. Honestly, I wouldn't help an injured person if it mean putting my goals and ambitions on the line. However, I admire that girl for being so courageous to do so. I am glad that this act is getting recognized and receiving acknowledgement.

    1. I admire how you're so honest in saying you wouldn't stop to help someone out if it meant sacrificing your own achievements. I think the majority of people would read something like this and say "Oh, I would stop in a heart beat to help that girl out" but in practice we are much more selfish than we like to think.

  3. I agree with you because her good is getting recognized, therefore it is "coming back her" as you stated.

  4. Maybe I am a deeply cynical person, but whenever I see a story like this, where someone who had so much to lose went out of their way to help somebody else, I always feel like somewhere in the deepest darkest parts of their brains they were hoping they would get recognition for it. Good on her for helping out her opponent, but no person is ever 100% selfless. I'm linking a site which explains a method used to reinforce good behavior called "caught being good". It motivates children to do nice, selfless things as much as possible in order to increase their chances of being surprised with a reward.

I agree with your idea that nowadays people no longer do things simply because it's the right thing. One way or the other, deep down they want recognition for whatever it might be that they did out of the "kindness of their hearts". If you're cynical, then so am I. However I think we're just being realistic, it's pretty sad, actually. But, it's the truth.

I thought that what she did was very compassionate. Any other person would've continued the race, however she didn't. Perhaps she put herself in her shoes, if that were to have happened to her, of course she'd want for someone to help her. Personally I don't know what I would've done in a situation like this. I thought it was almost movie like, in where something goes wrong and the hero of the movie comes along and helps in a way. They both finished their race and they ended up being friends after this which I also think is very nice. Attached is a link to an article describing another selfless act about a teacher donating a kidney to an ill student. Just as in this situation with the girl helping out a fellow competitor, it was not obligatory for him to do such a thing, but he did, just as she helped her opponent end the race.

I totally agree with you. I agree with how you said if that were to have happened to her, of course she'd want for someone to help her and this is very true because sometimes people don't help others but then expect other people to help them when they need it, and others always help. And I also think that at the end they both won the race and made a really nice friendship

I agree with this video because I think it was really nice and sweet for the Melanie to stop and pick up Danielle. Not a lot of people would of done it even Danielle said that a lot of people passed by her but Melanie was the only person that stopped and picked her up. Also, the fact that Danielle said that Melanie was half of her size and still carried her. And how Danielle at first couldn't pick Melanie up but she didn't give up and tried again until she accomplished to finish with her. Also I have a lot of respect for Melanie because I know a lot of people wouldn't of done what she did, and she won in second place even though she was struggling with a person in her back. I think she is a the real winner because she helped someone else, and satisfied herself knowing what she did was a good thing and also that it was a challenge for her to finish the race and she still did.

  9. I think this video was great because it shows that there is still faith in humanity. Its great that she helped a fellow competitor and not leave her like most people.
